According to the Cultured Pearl Association of America, the captivating blue color of Akoya pearls is the result of a grafting mishap. The process of nucleation—where a bead nucleus is inserted into the Pinctada martensii pearl oyster (the smallest saltwater pearl mollusk)—is delicate and precise. Normally, a small square of donor mantle tissue is placed over the bead, influencing the pearl's eventual color. However, in the case of Blue Akoya pearls, the color doesn't come from the donor mantle. Instead, it’s caused by organic matter that attaches to the nucleus when it’s inserted incorrectly. After that, it is then sorted again for the best Teri (luster/brightness) through machine testing. The light reflective value must achieve 90-100% grading in order to qualify for Tennyo. What does this mean? Tennyo pearls are almost double the brightness and luster of Hanadama pearls. What makes these pearls truly exceptional is their rarity. As you may know, Japanese pearls typically reach a maximum size of 9-9.5mm. However, these pearls range from 9.5 to 10mm, making them significantly larger and therefore much rarer. The production of pearls in this size is already limited, but finding enough pearls of the same size and exceptional quality to create a matching set is exceedingly rare. Tennyo < Hanadama < Premium Rose < Rose < Traditional pearl grading (AAA, AA, A) These pearls must be first graded into Hanadama quality by Pearl Science Lab of Japan. After that, it is then sorted again for the best Teri (luster/brightness) through machine testing. The light reflective value must achieve 90-100% grading in order to qualify for Tennyo. What does this mean? Tennyo pearls are almost double the brightness and luster of Hanadama pearls. What makes these pearls truly exceptional is their rarity. As you may know, Japanese pearls typically reach a maximum size of 9-9.5mm. However, these pearls range from 9.5 to 10mm, making them significantly larger and therefore much rarer. The production of pearls in this size is already limited, but finding enough pearls of the same size and exceptional quality to create a matching set is exceedingly rare.
